About Us

Our Mission

Freedom Rings of Lebanon Valley College seeks to support, educate, and advocate for students, faculty and staff who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender.

Membership

Meetings are open to all Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning (LGBTQ) people and allies. Meetings are a friendly and supportive time to discuss various issues in the LGBTQ community on campus and around the world as well as plan campus-wide activities for LGBTQ awareness.

We understand that not everyone is ready for the group atmosphere and one of our other representatives would be happy to meet with you on a confidential basis. Feel free to contact them by email or by calling 717.867.6135.

Freedom Rings is a safe place, a support system for those dealing with the internal and external struggles encountered by LGBTQ youth. Whether it's trouble with coming out, a bothersome roommate, parents that don't approve or anything else, Freedom Rings is here to listen. Due to the diversity of the support group, we have many people who can offer completely fresh perspectives to any problem. This group is also not just a group for LGBTQ students. We also serve as a connect between allies and "safe zone faculty members throughout campus.

A Brief History of Freedom Rings

Freedom Rings was founded in 1994 by the Chaplain of Lebanon Valley College, D. Darrell Woomer, Ph.D. The college had decided that it needed to provide a safe place for members of the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community. Shortly after the group was founded, it gained its first members. Since then, weekly meetings have been held, focused around an array of topics ranging from current events to equality to legislation and beyond. While controversial, the presence of the organization is infinitely crucial to the LGBT population of the college.
